1. Mary Almira Conrad, daughter of Martin Van Buren Conrad
and Catherine Mauck, was born on 7 Sep 1862 in Corydon, Harrison County
, Indiana and died on 14 Jul 1928 in Calico Rock, Izard Co., Ark at age 65.
General Notes:
After the death of her parents, Mary and her siblings were split between her
mother's relatives. Mary was taken by her mother's sister Elizabeth and her
husband James Long. Evidently Mary's aunt and uncle arranged the marriage
between Mary Almira and Samuel Snyder. This seems to be proved by this excerpt
from letter written by Mary Almira in July 1927 to her granddaughter Virga
Coombs before Virga's marriage. Punctuation has been added as Mary didn't have
any punctuation in her letter.
"I hope you
will bee happy and not make the mistake some has made. you are a little older
than I was when I mad the mistake of my life----I seeme lik I was making my
buriel cloths when I made my wedding cloths and I would rather it had bin
true."

1860 Census of Harrison County, Boone TWP, IN - age 62.
The descendants
of Peter Mauck, 1708-1980 book by William Richard Wolph, 1400 South Joyce
Street, Arlington, VA 22202 copyright 1980 stated that Conrad Frakes died in
1836. Marriage records of Harrison
County, IN show a Conrad Frakes marrying Elizabeth Fowler.
Will of John
Frakes (Wife Elizabeth) dated 27 Jan 1845 listed: Philip, John Jr., Catharine
Vandiver, Peter Frakes, Frederick Frakes, Nancy Beanblossom, Conrad Frakes,
Sarah Grey, Elizabeth Heon, & Mary Stapelton. Will was probated Feb. 13,
1849. The Conrad of late marriage date
could be the Conrad Frakes from this family.
The 1849
marriage date could indicate that Conrad Frakes is a brother to Peter
Frakes. William Frakes may be a brother
of Peter Frakes. What a coincidence that
William Frakes married Mary Fowler in 1848 and Conrad Frakes married Elizabeth
Fowler in 1849.
The men listed
in the will of John Frakes include a Peter and a Conrad Frakes. Could this be
our Peter Frakes, who is not a son of Conrad Frakes that died in 1836. Need to check out some more marriage records
in Harrison County, IN. There is no William Frakes listed in that will. Who does he really belong to?

General Notes:
Opecquon was the
name applied at that time to most of the region south of the present town of
Strasburg, Va. He lived in that part of Frederick Co. which was included May 5,
1772, in Dunmore Co. The latter county was renamed Shenandoah Co. February 1,
1778.
John Mauck, Sr.
was one of 27 initial members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Strasburg,
Virginia. He was a substantial landowner
in Shenandoah Co.
In the fall of
1811, John and Christena emigrated to Harrison Co., Indiana, where John
established the first regular ferry service on the Ohio River between Kentucky
and Harrison Co. No ferry on the Ohio
River was used more than his. John
operated this ferry until 1818 when his son Frederick arrived from Shenandoah
Co., Virginia and assumed its management.
A road ran from Mauck's ferry through Corydon, Salem, and Brownstown to
Indianapolis, and this road was known as Mauck's Ferry Road.
John was buried
in the first cemetery at Mauckport, Indiana, located just east of Mauckport
across Lick Run Bridge and near the new Ohio River Bridge. The latter bridge connects Indiana Route 135
with Ky. Route 79... The cemetery no longer
exists. There were only a few stones in
this old cemetery. They were washed away

General Notes:
BIOGRAPHY: Well, I have located this evidence for you. When I was at Shenandoah
County, VA last October, I was in the County Courthouse at Woodstock and
located some later Estate records of Peter Mauck. This was a survey that was
dated April Court, 1791, and the Dower of the widow of Peter was layed off.
(This was 20 years after his death in 1771) Because of the condition of the
book, they would not permit the record to be copied but I copied it by hand,
word for word and traced the map of the property that was included. The
property was divided into three parts and she chose the middle piece which
included the mansion house and garden. This property was also described as
bordering on that of Martin Black, and contained 58 acres. The court had
directed Michael Speagle, Henry Keller, Phillip Snappe and Jacob Rinker to lay
off this dower. In this document her name was spelled in several places and in
each the spelling was LEANNAH MAUK, relic of PETER MAUK, deceased.
there is a
record in the St Paul, Episcopal Lutheran Church in Strasburg, VA that shows
that a Juliana Magin attended Holy Communion there on 26 April 1797. I am sure
that most of you know that in German Church Records, it was not uncommon for
"in" to be added after a female's surname, so this would be Juliana
Mag, and this was one of the variant spellings found in some early records for
this family.

One of the first
settlers in the Shenandoah Valley along with our ancestors Abraham Strickler
and John Rhodes. Other early settlers are Mathis Selser, Philip and Paul Long
and Michael Kaufman who came into the valley from Lancaster co, PA. In the
early part of 1733 these 6 men petitioned the Lt. Governor William Gooch of VA
for a clarification and proof of the land they had purchased from Jacob Stover.
It has been suggested that Stover was not completely honest in his land Patent
transactions. John Rhodes was living on the patent at the time of the Rhodes
Massacre. The others perhaps became discouraged because of the lack of a clear
title to the land and moved to other places in the valley. Unk whom Micheal
