Douglas County Herald August 27, 1896 A Bad Runaway  Martin Conrad, who lives four miles south of Ava, was found in a very critical condition last Sunday, by the side of the road betwen his place and Ava. His team had ran away, throwing him out of the wagon, thereby leaving him by the side of the road in an unconscious condition. One of the horses which Mr. Conrad was driving is "balky", and it is supposed that he refused to pull up the hill, without the use of the "pursuader". The horses then became so excited and frightened that they ran like a flash, breaking the wagon and harness all to pieces. When Mr. Conrad was found, the track, near the road side inicated that he had been dragged under the wagon for quite a distance. His head and face was covered with blood, oozing from the large cuts and bruises he had received. It is very doubtful as to his recovering. Later ----He died last night.
