William S. Miller

William S. Miller was the second son of Adam and Hannah Sheets Miller, born December 11, 1806 in Rowan County North Carolina. He was said to be 5'7" tall and a small build, but that was about average for the time. He was probably the most industrious of the three Miller boys. He ran a 6 Conestoga wagon "freight train" from the New Albany area to the Washington County area.

He acquired several acres of land, some of which has been passed down through the generations and Miller owned to this day. William Miller was probably the most industrious of Adam Miller's boys, putting land ownership at the top of his to do list. I do not know how much land "Bill" Miller had, but the parcel  owned by his descendents is around 225 acres, much of it added by Bud Miller, his descendent. I also don't know how many of his children lived to get an inheritance, but it's been told that all of them got land and he had 13 children. Some of William Miller's family also calls George Beck Sr. a Great Grampa.

Here are 2 Land Grants of 40 acres Bill got (in PDF format):

January 20, 1833 Bill married Elizabeth Mary Wingler in Washington County. Together they had 4 girls; Mary who married Register Hoggatt, Lucinda who married John Alfred Beck, Nancy who married Jesse T. Sill, and June Miller.

Bill married then married Asenith Sill, the sister of Jesse T. Sill. With Asenith he had 2 sons James Bruce and Eli Henry. They had daughters: Hulda, Lidda, Susan, Amanda, (who married Nelson Ratts) Alethia, Lydia, and Martha.

I intend to get a picture of a log cabin that was reportedly built by William S. Miller himself, still standing on the land along South Bud Miller Road. Bud Miller is the Great Grandson of Bill Miller and the Great Great Grandson of Adam Miller. Bill's Grandson and Bud's father, was Dewey Ray Miller, and was well known in the area for his political activity as a Democrat.

Bill's son Eli Henry Miller married back into the Miller bloodline - so his descendents have a double dose of Miller flowing in their blood. Essentially Eli Henry married his first cousin's daughter.

Bill's sister (and Adam Miller's daughter) Margaret "Peggy" Adams, had a daughter named Margaret Mariah Adams. Margaret Mariah married James Thomas Lowery and had a daughter named Laura Emma Lowery. Eli Henry and Laura got married and they gave their descendents a double dose of Miller.

Although many of the Millers have moved on from their pioneer roots in Washington County, William Miller's bloodline has remained for 185 years. Owning the same land for nearly 180 years, the Millers have found their land of milk and honey, in beautiful, historic Washington County Indiana - better known as "Home".

Personally I am out of William's brother Dave's bloodline, and I am the first Miller of my bloodline born outside of Washington County, my father Luke Miller, was born in Fredericksburg

This information is the research of many people across the United States and may contain errors. It is presented as the best information to date. Like all of those whose work I have incorporated herein, my research is a work in progress and subject to change without notice. A special thanks to Marlene Ricci of CA, Dwayne Meyer of CA, Jacqueline Bean of TX, Debbie Dick of IN, Milus Miller of IL, Carol Hendricks Miller of IN, Clarence Miller of IN, and Harold Glen Miller of IN. There are numerous others too; many of which are unknown, but their findings and stories are still much appreciated. Much of this would not have been possible with out their information. Also this website includes historical facts gathered from Washington County History, Indiana History, Rowan County and Salisbury North Carolina Historical sources and other US Historical sources.
